We attended the 11th Meeting of the Advanced Power Semiconductor Research Division, held at G Messe Gunma in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, from November 24 to 26, 2024.

Professor Hatakeyama, Associate Professor Okamoto, Shimura (first-year master’s student), and Taguchi (first-year master’s student) participated from our laboratory. The two students gave poster presentations, as they had done at the previous year’s meeting.

The conference featured presentations and lively discussions on a wide range of topics related to power semiconductors, including devices, fabrication processes, material properties, and crystal growth. In addition to academic research presentations, companies also introduced products and technologies that they had commercialized.

During the approximately 75-minute poster session, we presented our research and discussed the results with attendees. Through discussions with students from other universities and engineers and researchers from industry, we gained new perspectives that we had not considered before. Listening to other students’ presentations and exchanging ideas with them was also highly stimulating and educational.

This was our second time attending the meeting, following our participation the previous year. Once again, it was a valuable learning experience from which we gained a great deal.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity to broaden our perspectives by learning about the latest research conducted by universities and companies. In addition to SiC, many studies on GaN and diamond power semiconductors were presented.

We hope to continue making progress in our research so that we can participate again next year. We would also strongly encourage our junior students to attend this conference in the future.

We attended the 10th Meeting of the Advanced Power Semiconductor Research Division, held in Kanazawa from November 30 to December 1, 2023, and presented our research.

Five members of our laboratory participated: Shimura, the author of this article and a fourth-year undergraduate student; Taguchi and Kimata, also fourth-year undergraduate students; Professor Hatakeyama; and Associate Professor Okamoto.

The meeting attracted approximately 600 participants and featured presentations covering a wide range of topics in power semiconductors, including crystal growth, fundamental material characterization, fabrication processes, devices, and applications in power-electronic systems.

We gave 75-minute poster presentations and had discussions with many attendees. A large number of industry researchers and engineers also participated, giving us a valuable opportunity to understand how our research relates to the technologies and solutions needed by industry. Seeing presentations by students and researchers from other universities also increased my motivation.

This was my first visit to Kanazawa. There were many more people than I had expected, and I found it to be a very lively city. It was about as cold as Toyama, though!

Giving a presentation at an academic conference for the first time was an extremely valuable experience.

As this meeting provides a rare opportunity to interact directly with people from industry, I strongly encourage our junior students to participate in the future.
